DOWNLOAD THE AMERICAN RED CROSS 6-MONTH PROGRESS REPORT ON HAITI

As part of its largest international response since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the global Red Cross network has helped almost 2 million Haitians. In six months, the American Red Cross has spent and has signed agreements to spend $148.5 million to meet the most urgent needs of earthquake survivors. It will continue to support hundreds of thousands of additional survivors in the next several years until the last donated dollar is spent.

The global Red Cross network is providing:

  • Semi-permanent shelters to house 165,000 people
  • Cash grants and microloans to help nearly 210,000 people
  • Water for 280,000 people each day
  • Disaster preparedness activities to protect 500,000 people
  • Medical care and/or health education for 435,000 people
  • Emergency shelter materials for 625,000 people
  • Latrines for 238,000 people
  • Emergency supplies for 125,000 people for use during hurricane season
  • Food for 1.3 million people for one month

FINANCIAL DONATIONS:

The American Red Cross honors donor intent. We are accepting gifts restricted to the response in Haiti. You can also help the victims of countless crises, like the recent earthquakes around the world, by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support where it is most needed.

  • Donate by phone: (800) RED-CROSS or (800) 257-7575 (Spanish)
  • Donate by text: Send a $10 donation by texting ‘Haiti’ to 90999
  • Donate by mail: American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013

IN-KIND DONATIONS

The Red Cross is unable to accept small, individual donations or collections of items such as clothing, food or cleaning supplies. The cost to sort, package and distribute these types of donations to disaster victims is almost always greater than the cost of purchasing the items locally, and it is logistically impossible to distribute a wide variety of individual items in a meaningful way. While the Red Cross can not accept the donation of an individual item, you can support the Red Cross through the online sale of personal items (such as through www.missionfish.org)

BLOOD DONATIONS

The American Red Cross does not provide blood services in the Greater Seattle area. If you are interested in making a donation of blood, please contact the Puget Sound Blood Center.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

At this time, the American Red Cross is not accepting volunteers for Haiti. We do have several local opportunities within our International Services program and Language Bank. We also have local disaster relief opportunities. For more information about these and other local volunteer opportunities, please click here.
