RED CROSS NOW OFFERS CEUs

Many of our course takers—such as nurses, social workers, recreation professionals, teachers and day care providers—are professionals who need continuing education units to maintain a license and/or certification. In order to provide this added service to our customers, the American Red Cross applied to become and was approved as an authorized provider by the International Association of Continuing Education and Training (IACET). IACET's Criteria for Quality Continuing Education and Training Programs are the standards by which hundreds of organizations measure their educational offerings. Here are some frequently asked questions about the program, approved classes  and referral cards for students. Visit www.iacet.org for more information.

GUIDANCE ON AED USE ON INFANTS

Guidance has been posted to Instructor's Corner on how to incorporate the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Policy Update regarding the use of AEDs on infants into American Red Cross Training Courses. Based on scientific review, the American Red Cross Advisory Council on First Aid, Aquatics, Safety and Preparedness (ACFASP) developed a response to address the question "Should an AED be used on an infant in cardiac arrest?" Here is the guide to augment your instructor manual .

NEW 2-YEAR CERTIFICATE FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS

The American Red Cross announces the following changes to the certificates and validity periods for the CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer course.

  1. Certificates issued in a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer course will now be valid for two years except for lifeguards whose certification will remain one year. The certificate issued for these courses will be a new certificate titled CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
  2. The certificate issued to lifeguards will be a new certificate titled CPR/AED for Lifeguards which is valid for one year.

Following both the scientific literature and OSHA recommendations, the Red Cross continues to strongly encourage all professional rescuers to retrain in CPR/AED annually and to refresh their skills at least every six months. The maintenance of skills and knowledge is achieved by a combination of course work including retraining, skills refreshers and application of these skills. Check the frequently asked questions or www.instructorscorner.org for more information.
